Kalan -Kaalan is a more popular traditional Keralite dish made of yogurt, coconut, and vegetables tuber like yam and raw plantain. It is served as part of the sadya, the traditional Kerala feast. An interesting South Indian recipe, Kaalan is a dish made with banana, yoghurt and coconut.

The ingredients needed to make Kaalan:
  1. Prepare 1 no plantain Raw (Nendra kaya) -
  2. Get 1 cup Yam / Chena (chopped) -
  3. Take 2 cups Curd -
  4. Prepare 1 cup coconut grated
  5. Make ready 5 nos Pepper -
  6. Take 1 no chilly Green -
  7. Take 1/2 tsp turmeric powder  -
  8. Take 1/2 tsp cumin seed -
  9. Get salt - as reqd
  10. Get 1/2 tsp chilly red   powder -
  11. Get 1 sprig curry leaves -
  12. Make ready 1/4 tsp mustard seed -
  13. Make ready 2 nos chillies dry red -
  14. Prepare 2 tsps oil -

Kaalan is a very traditional Malayali dish made using Yogurt, Coconut and fruits or vegetables. It is always part of an Onam Sadhya. Back home, we never used to make Kaalan. Instead, Pulisshery was made using Yogurt and Coconut.

Instructions to make Kaalan:
  1. Peel and cube the plantain and yam
  2. In a kadai, add plantain and yam pieces along with turmeric powder, chilly powder, salt, curry leaves and 1 cup of water
  3. Cook till the vegetables are done.
  4. Meanwhile, grind together coconut, pepper, cumin seeds and green chilly to a fine paste
  5. Add this paste to the cooked vegetables.Boil them well stirring continuously.Add salt.
  6. Finally add curd to this and simmer for 2 - 3 minutes. Do not boil.
  7. Heat oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds, red chilly fenugreek seeds and curry leaves.
  8. Add this to the gravy.
  9. The simple and tasty Kaalan is ready to be served.
